Addressing Training Challenges for Junior Doctors - We Want Your Input!

Understanding the Current Landscape

The latest General Medical Council (GMC) survey results for 2024 have once again highlighted the persistent issue of burnout among doctors. With 40% of trainees feeling burnt out and 63% at medium to high risk, it's clear that the pressures faced by medical professionals are significant. Particularly alarming is the situation in emergency medicine, where 32% of trainees are at high risk of burnout. Even half of the trainers themselves are struggling, reporting moderate to high risk levels of burnout.

Key Concerns Highlighted

Despite some slight improvements from the peak figures in 2023, there are still major concerns that need addressing. Leadership opportunities for trainees have decreased by 6%, down to 63%. Trainees also reported being affected by rota gaps and discrimination in the workplace. On a positive note, many trainees expressed satisfaction with their clinical supervision and overall experience in their current posts, showing resilience in the face of these challenges.

Impact on Training and Development

These findings suggest a significant barrier for junior doctors seeking essential training. High workloads and rota gaps make it difficult to attend courses during normal working hours, forcing many to consider flexible, on-demand learning options. This situation presents an opportunity for training providers like us to adapt and meet these needs. We want to support you in gaining the skills necessary for your career progression, particularly in critical areas such as ultrasound training, leadership, and clinical theory.

We Want to Hear From You!

As we strive to better support your training needs, we are keen to hear directly from you, the junior doctors who are at the heart of this issue. How can we make accessing training easier for you? What types of courses or formats would best fit into your busy schedules? Are there specific barriers we can help overcome to make your learning journey smoother?
